Welcome

ENT Specialist Sydney provides you with access to information on Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) surgery in Sydney. This includes a general introduction to this classification of surgical medicine, it’s participants, terminology and useful links.

ENT Surgery is an area of surgical medicine that focuses on treating conditions that relate to the head and neck. This excludes Neurosurgery (surgery that relates to the brain and nervous system).

There are many medical conditions that require surgery in the head and neck areas, from relatively simple procedures such as tonsillitis, through to major reconstructive surgery of the face and head. It includes problems with the ears, vocal cords and nasal passages. These issues may arise from trauma, cancer or long term degradation of function. It can also include cosmetic procedures such as the rhinoplasty (nose job) and facelift.

The technical name for ENT Surgery is Otorhinolaryngology. An ENT Surgeon or ENT Specialist is known as an Otolaryngologist. There are also specialised areas within the general area of Ear, Nose and Throat surgery such as Head and Neck Surgery, Ear Nose and Throat doctor, Ear Nose Throat specialist and so on.

ENT Surgeons will have a Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons (FRACS). They will have done their surgical training under the auspices of the Australian Society of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery (ASOHNS). You will see the letters FRACS (Orth) with their name.

Common ENT Operations

Rhinoplasty Sydney. A rhinoplasty, otherwise known as a nose job, is a very common operation performed by ear nose and throat surgeons. A rhinoplasty will be used to improve the physical appearance of the patient, or alleviate issues regarding the function of the nose and nasal passages.

The two main types of rhinoplasty are known as open rhinoplasty and closed rhinoplasty. Open rhinoplasty requires incisions to the outer portions of the nose, typically at the base of the nasal sceptum. A closed rhinoplasty is carried out from within the nose only.

If a second rhinoplasty is required to complete or revise work done in a primary rhinoplasty it is known as a revision rhinoplasty.

Rhinoplasty Cost. As with most things, the cost of a rhinoplasty will differ from surgeon to surgeon and depend on the type of procedure required. An indicative nose job cost is $5,500 through to over $10,000 which includes hospital fees, the anesthetist and other costs. You may be eligible for health insurance or Medicare rebates and these may vary depending on whether the procedure is classed as cosmetic or not.

Tonsillectomy. The removal of the tonsils is one of the most common procedures in pediatric ear nose and throat surgery. An adenoidectomy (removal of the adenoids) will normally be done with the tonsillectomy in children. A tonsillectomy in adults is much less common but not unusual.

A tonsillectomy will normally be required if a child has multiple instance of tonsillitis or has enlarged tonsils for other reasons. A tonsillectomy in adults will normally be to help relieve sleep apnea or other obstructive issues.

The operation is relatively straight forward. Recovery can take take from one week to several weeks during which pain in the throat can be moderate to severe. Ice cream is famously prescribed to tonsillectomy patients, but anything cold, even ice, is ideal to help reduce the swelling in the throat where the tonsils used to be.

Tonsillitis Symptoms. Having tonsillitis is similar to having a common cold and the two can certainly occur together. You will have a sore throat and a raised temperature. The main tonsillitis symptom to look for is noticeable swelling at the back of the mouth on either side of the entrance to the throat, and in particular, any white pus streaks across the swelling.

If the person has viral tonsillitis there is no effective treatment. Bacterial tonsillitus such as that caused by streptococcal bacteria can be treated by antibiotics which can be prescribed by your doctor after an examination. Antibiotics can relieve the tonsillitis symptoms quite effectively.

Blepharoplasty Sydney. This procedure is more often simply called eyelid surgery, for obvious reasons. Eyelid surgery is very often carried out as a cosmetic procedure however it can also be necessary to treat functional problems with the eyelid.

Eyelid surgery, blepharoplasty, seeks to take out excess skin or fat from around the eye. It can be performed on the top, lower, or both sets of eyelids.

The recovery time can be several weeks as the procedure does create a lot of swelling and also bruising around the eyes. You should not plan to go back to work within this time frame, which will vary based on individual circumstances.

Cost of a Blepharoplasty. The cost of cosmetic surgery can vary substantially, but as a guide, the cost of eyelid surgery should be somewhere between $2,000 to $5,000 for either set of eyelids. If you have both sets of eyelids done at the same time the cost should be less than double as there will be economies of scale.
